Bread And Baked Goods

Bread is probably one of the most popular, essential food known to mankind since its invention. Matter of fact, the old saying "Greatest thing since sliced bread" that we all remember saying for a really long time originated from, bread. And yet, bread has taken some heat (no pun intended) for it's high carbohydrate, low in micronutrients, and its gluten contents that may cause issues for some people.

While in school, eating white bread is synonymous to 80's music. It's fun, delicious and plentiful. My Mom would pack me some sandwich to school and it's all I would eat. Loaf after the next, bread was the favorite lunch food any day and at any time.

Three decades later, although still popular, bread has its seen its critics. The "white bread" known for its bland taste has been found to contain highly processed flour and additives that contribute to obesity, diabetes and heart disease. Undoubtedly, if you're a health conscious consumer white bread is probably low on your grocery list to buy.

Then again, do you know that white bread is just one type of bread? If you look up the different types of bread, you'll find a chockfull of baked varieties from the high calorie banana bread to the lower calorie sourdough. Evidently, a lower calorie sourdough won't stay as a low calorie food any longer after you add butter or egg.

If you're thinking bread isn't as healthy as the bread you know growing up as a kid, remember that bread now comes in healthy options with ingredients like whole grains that are high in fiber and naturally low in fat and cholesterol. Some breads contain antioxidants, minerals, vitamins, and plant-derived phytochemicals that have anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting properties. So, the next time you make yourself a sandwich remember that bread isn't all the same. Get yourself some healthy bread that's right for you and you'll enjoy eating it no matter the occasion - Guilt-Free!
