National Pretzel Day
Who knew that a dough bread shaped into a knot would be a huge hit. But do you know how the spectacular dough called pretzel all started?
According to legend, the pretzel was believed to have been developed by European Christian monks to reward children who learn their prayers. By the late 18th century, German immigrants to the United States opened up bakeries in states like Pennsylvania, Illinois and New York that later became renowned for their soft pretzels.
In 1850, the hard pretzel was made commercially available by the Sturgis Bakery in Lititz, Pennsylvania. Soon, the popular soft and knot-shaped pretzel has evolved into a bagful of loops, braids, letters, and sticks that you can snack on all day long.
Fast forward to 2008, it's believed that the average American consumes about 1.5 pounds of pretzels per year. Pretzel's popularity has become a food staple that you'll find them in a variety of shapes, color and flavor.
If you're still on the fence about eating a pretzel, today's a good reason to indulge on that yummy snack we all know today as pretzel.
