It's National Safe Sun Week!
By this time of year, the Summer season has started. With warm weather felt in many regions of the country, many of you have plans for an outdoor retreat. And, after months of staying indoors in solitary confinement and avoiding crowds due to COVID-19, we are now appreciating just how much we missed spending time outdoors.
Whether you prefer being at the beach, a park, or in your own backyard, this year is no different when it comes to protecting yourself from the sun's UV rays.
According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, skin cancer is "the most common cancer in the United States and worldwide".
Accordingly,
- 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer by the age of 70.
- More than 2 people die of skin cancer in the U.S. every hour.
- Having 5 or more sunburns doubles your risk of melanoma.
These numbers don't lie. Skin cancer is a real and serious issue that no one should take lightly. With proper sun protection, everyone can stay safe against the sun's harmful UV rays.
By covering up as much skin while under the sun with ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) clothing and fabrics, you're ensuring that you stay protected. Wearing a 3-inch or more wide brim hat offers sun protection to facial and neck areas most exposed to UV damage. More importantly, don't forget to apply sunscreen to any exposed skin and re-apply often as needed because water or sweat reduces the effectiveness of sunscreens.
We hope everyone enjoys this Memorial Day's Weekend fun in the sun by staying Sun-Safe! Remember to plan ahead!
Until next time! Happy Memorial Day, Everyone!
