High-Intensity Interval Training: Is "HIIT" Right For You?
More and more people are getting into high-intensity workout group classes. High-intensity workout or High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) has been shown to improve cardiovascular health and burn more calories in a short amount of time while helping you lose fat and build muscles in the process.
However, there have been reports of injuries related to HIIT including a recent study in April 2019 from Rutgers University that found men ages 20 to 39 were likely to get injured. The study found that poor form and muscle overuse as likely factors when engaging in these types of exercises.
This month, Mayo Clinic published the results of their study suggesting that there's minimal risk of injury in people who engage in high-intensity training program.
For anyone that wants to get back in shape, these 2 recent studies just months apart would make anyone re-think if HIIT is even worth risking. After all, why break a sweat when you can get hurt?
The common thread in all this is, HIIT is a form of exercise and when performed improperly can lead to injuries.
HIIT is also not for everyone or a one size fits all exercise regimen because our joints and muscles aren't always subjected to the high-impact or high-energy exercise, nor do we all accustom ourselves to the rigors of strength training.
It is worth mentioning that HIIT is better than being sedentary. But, if you're participating in any exercise regimen remember to take things slow especially when you're doing it for the first time. It also helps to have a professional trainer show you proper technique and form when performing the different types of HIIT exercises.
