February is American Heart Month
February is American Heart Month. Did you know that cardiovascular diseases (diseases of the heart and blood vessels) are the number one cause of death in the United States? Some complementary health approaches have been studied to see whether they may help control cardiovascular risk factors, including high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels. Here's what the research shows:
- Some dietary supplements, such as garlic and soy, may have small beneficial effects on blood cholesterol levels.
- Some complimentary approaches, including meditation, tai chi, qigong, and yoga as well as garlic, fish oil, flaxseed, and green or black tea, may have small beneficial effects on blood pressure.
- If you have high cholesterol or high blood pressure, follow the treatment plan prescribed by your health care provider. Talk with your provider about any complimentary approaches you're considering.
