Bottles And Cups

Choosing a baby bottle or cup doesn't have to be complicated. The various brands that manufacture these offer many more choices in different shapes, colors and styles than our grandparents come to know. So, here are the essentials on baby bottles.

  • If you like a bottle that's lightweight and unbreakable, choose BPA-free plastic bottles. BPA, also known as bisphenol A, is a chemical used to make plastic and some studies have shown that BPA in plastic can seep into food or beverages that can lead to possible health effects on the child's brain, prostate gland, and behavior. Fortunately, since 2012 the FDA banned the use of BPA from baby bottles and sippy cups. If you find a baby bottle or sippy cup made prior to 2012, know that these may contain BPA.
  • If you prefer to "sterilize" a bottle by boiling it in water, a glass bottle is the way to go. Glass bottles are heavier and breakable and are not suitable for children who drop or throw their bottles on the floor or wall.
  • Disposable bottles also called "vented" allow air to enter the bottle. These bottles can have a liner or pouch that encases the formula preventing aeration that cause milk nutrients to decrease in concentration. The liners main feature helps ensure milk to stay fresher and offers convenience. Once it's emptied, just toss it.
